DONE SOMETHING DO ISN’T LIKE SOMETHING
-the spreading morbidity of Taiwan society
Preface
This editorial column article “Done something do isn’t like something -- the spreading morbidity of Taiwan society” by Gao Si Jyun I read, 2nd of August 2005, at Union Daily Newspaper Supplement in Page E7. A feeling of sorrowful occurs to me, so I try to translate it into English as my maxim to share with whom concerns about this topic.
I had written, done anything is like anything, a short essay before. In the first paragraph of the article is “The most valuable praising to an individual person is the inscription, “DONE ANYTHING IS LIKE ANYTHING“, been engraved on his (her) tombstone.”
Writing “DONE SOMETHING DO ISN’T LIKE SOMETHING” today is surely intrigued by vibration. “The most depreciatory devaluating to an individual person after his (her) pass away is “DONE SOMETHING DO ISN’T LIKE SOMETHING.” “, I just point out in the beginning as well.
“DONE ANYTHING IS LIKE ANYTHING” is to play the right role well what you act. The key point of done well and done right is focus one’s concentration on, that is keeping one's mind involved in. It appears some paragons of Taiwan society, such as Sculpture of Jhu Ming, Dancing of Lin Huai Min, Calligraphy of Tong Yang Zih, Literature of Yu Guang Jhong, Infirmary of Huang Da Fu, Charity of Yao Ren Lu, even though the Dumpling Buns of Ding Tai Fong.
Every professional business fields exist distinguished and outstanding masters in what theirs success is without any mystique but remains consistent from the beginning to the end and done anything is like anything without regret.
It is a pity what it appears too much lure on the diversity, opened, lax and discrepant of Taiwan society that is eager for quickly successful with instant profits, to be difficult for people, who is engaged in political affairs especially, to possess unstable on own position, to clarify hard own role, to know well own might, and to definitely say “no” more difficult.
Our society seems deeply to admire those who can do different work on the same time and praises them for competency, to exaggerate their daring for those who can hide the truth from the masses, to envy their skills for those who can rise meteoric to fame. In fact those examples can’t be very steadily and last enduring. The shameful conducts done by those kind of character will be exposed to public sooner or later and become the vicious demonstration of “Done something do isn’t like something”.
At this moment of Taiwan , a common phenomenon exists, is confusing of role orientation, impractical and exaggerative of title. What so called “Commercial Seniors” are actual “Bazaar Gangs”; “the Delegates of Public Opinions” seldom represent in the name of citizenry, “Common Leaderships” express rarely a great wise idea, “Political Character” is real “proficient of manipulating political”, “the High Authority” is just the man who controls clandestinely behind, the villain who says “love Taiwan” actually done the behavior of unloving Taiwan. All those examples are disconnected of “fame” and “reality” which bring forth the various status quo of “done something do isn’t like something”. Some were done ridiculous, some were done forgotten oneself, and some were done even made us regretful.
Public characters – the chiefs, delegates, leaders of the industrial and commercial world…etc., under the era of suffusing with media what they should obey most, the hardest achievable principle, is to match one's words with deeds. At least no matter, in public or in private, what you say and what you do couldn’t be always on the contrary.
One of Taiwan society chaos is “Celebrity” from all walks of life who puffs grandiloquently in public and executes against one's conscience in private which makes us confused the truth of their dual personality beneath. They are skilled in bragging but are afraid of performing exploits without macroscopic layout. We can affirm what they “say” are not equal to what they “do” and done something do isn’t like something.
Subdividing “done something do isn’t like something” which originates from three possibilities:
1. Roles confused: One can’t separate scrupulously public interests from private ownership, can’t distinguish clearly between duty and right, wears many hats but don’t know what should be.
2. Roles disordered: Not only changing brain when having different title but also changing partner at different occasions.
3. Roles overloaded:A position be occupied far above one’s abilities and experiences can afford.
For many government chiefs at this moment who always wear many hats (roles confused), always mix between government and election affairs (roles disordered). The basic problem is scanty of abilities and morals to take the heavy responsibility of government chief (roles overloaded).
Taken the United States presidents for examples:
Someone amuses at Regan: the third-class being as an actor, second-class being as a president and the first-class being as a husband.
Someone ridicules to Carter: done worse being as a president and done well being as a retired president.
Someone commons on Clinton : touching being as an addresser, capricious being as a strategic maker, ingratiating being as a president and flirtatious being as a husband.
When “done anything is like anything” merges into the core of culture, the vitality of society is lifting. When “done something do isn’t like something” becomes vogue, society is depravity downward. The only prescription to struggle free of dilemma and depravity is: “done anything is like anything” – officers being act as officers, delegates being act as delegates, enterprises being act as enterprises, media being act as media.
In spite of the intellectuals, nowadays, have gradually lost their power to guide the ideological trends of society, intellectuals still must look like intellectuals. The more prestige of academic you own today, the more abnegation you should pursue. For that arrangement of position beyond your professional ability should refuse bravely and should be modest reticent to various policy advice exceeded your skill. Like that it just could eliminate the pervading of epidemic of “done something do isn’t like something”.
